About House Production
What you are listening for when you write with a house beat
House music is a rhythmic instrument. The four-on-the-floor kick is not decoration — it is the grid the whole track is built on, and everything else in the arrangement exists to sit around it.
The kick defines the pulse. In House the four-on-the-floor keeps time continuously, and the arrangement is layered on top of that steady pulse rather than replacing it. Anything you add has to sit without disturbing that steadiness.
Offbeat emphasis is the identity. Open hats and claps land between the beats rather than on them, and that displacement is most of what makes House sound like House. Listen for where the emphasis falls.
Build in layers. House arrangements typically add elements every eight or sixteen bars. If you are writing over one, follow that structure rather than filling the whole arrangement at once.
