About Trap Production
What you are listening for when you write with a trap beat
Trap is defined by the 808 and the hi-hat, and everything else exists to make those two elements hit harder. These productions keep the sub-bass prominent and the melodic layer deliberately dark.
The 808 is the centre of gravity. Sub-bass should be felt as much as heard, and it needs to sustain through a bar rather than punch and vanish. Notice whether the low end has real length to it.
Hi-hat pattern carries the momentum. Trap hi-hats often move in rolls and triplets that sit above the tempo. That movement is what creates the forward energy, and it is what a vocal has to sit inside without duplicating.
Atmosphere does a lot of the work. Dark pads and subtle movement behind the drums keep a sparse arrangement from sounding empty. Resist adding too much in the mid-range — that is where the vocal needs to live.
Production notes
- Sustained sub-bass with real length in the low end
- Moving hi-hat patterns for forward momentum
- Dark atmospheric layers rather than busy mid-range
- Open vocal space above the bass register

Which licence for a Trap release?
