Drill came out of Chicago and spread globally because its rhythmic idea was genuinely different: the 808 slides between notes rather than landing on them, and the melody is deliberately unresolved. These productions lean into that tension.
Sliding 808s are the defining sound. Rather than hitting the downbeat cleanly, the bass bends between notes. This is what makes Drill feel urgent, and it is why a vocal written too rigidly will sound wrong against it.
The melody should leave space for the bass to do the talking. If the instrumental melody occupies the same register as your vocal, the two compete. Write the vocal so the 808 remains the main event underneath it.
Darkness is not the same as heaviness. Drill can be aggressive without being loud — arrangement space and timbre do most of the work. Avoid stacking layers until it feels full; leave gaps.
